The Land That Brought You Raw Fish Is Saying No to Seafood
Japanese Try to Stem Falling Consumption With Songs, Classes; Bones Are a Problem
By YUKA HAYASHI (WSJ)

TOKYO—The Japanese fishing industry landed a big win last week when it persuaded other maritime nations to nix a trading ban on Atlantic bluefin tuna. The fish is so prized in Japan that it's dubbed "true" tuna.
But at home, the defenders of Japan's proud fish-eating culture are facing a more serious threat: kids like Yuta Itsuno, a 14-year-old middle schooler.
"I love fishing, but I hate eating fish," he said, as he hung out with friends in Tokyo's fashionable Harajuku neighborhood. "They smell fishy, and I don't like their bones."

This is an exemplary or typical WSJ article.

Against All the Odds (Michael Lewis, The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine)

41vvmxp3irl__sl500_aa240_

Michael Lewis, (2010), The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, W W Norton & Co Inc.

Michael Lewis, the author of classic Liar’s Poker (1990), “waited for the end of Wall Street” in two decades (L.l02).  But, it didn’t end, but flourished. Then it spectacularly exploded in 2008.  He thought to himself: “If only I’d stuck around, this is the sort of catastrophe I might have created” (L.129).  Certainly, he didn’t.  He left the Wall Street some twenty years ago.  But, being an ex-Wall Street guy, he felt obliged to know more.  He wanted to know someone “who had anticipated the subprime mortgage cataclysm, thus setting himself up in advance to make a fortune from it” (L.145).  He wanted to find someone who made the big short.

Thus, he followed the life stories of Steve Eisman, Mike Burry, and Charlie Ledley.  They are odd in their own ways.  “Even as late as the summer of 2006, as home prices began to fall, it took a certain kind of person to see the ugly facts and react to them – to discern, in the profile of the beautiful young lady, the face of an old witch. … All of them were, almost by definition, odd.  But they were not all odd in the same way.” (L.1680)  I won't preview how they have been odd in their own ways, because it is the main dish of the book.  You will enjoy how tough they had to be against the tide.

The readers will wonder: Why are they odd?  Or precisely speaking, why do they have to be odd?  It is because they have to make their own bets in a very rare (once in a century) and difficult situation.  They have to gamble in a Heads-I-Win-Tale-I-Lose situation against the financial system too big to fail.  The rule of the system is that “(s)uccess was individual achievement; failure was a social problem.” (L.4045)  You should be odd enough to fight through and through.  In this sense, a theme of this book is the integrity of odd people vs. the greed of the best and the brightest.  The taste of triumph  for the former is bitter sweet.

I believe this book completes a set of narratives on the crisis of 2008, which has two dimensions: macroeconomic side and financial side.  Krugman (2008) focuses mainly on the macroeconomic side of the crisis.  Ahamed (2009) lets us think the monetary-policy handling through the life stories of policy makers during the Great Depression.  On the financial side, Fox (2009) informs us of the crucial history of finance as academic discipline.  Tett (2009) precisely explains the origin of the weird derivatives.  We had needed life stories of those who fought against all the odds.  The void was now filled.

China’s property bubble is worse than it looks
By Takatoshi Ito (FT)
Published: March 16 2010 22:43

The Chinese official statistics say that the average rise in property prices was 10.7 per cent in February. The increase is accelerating from a year-on-year rise of 9.5 per cent in January. However, the data may significantly underestimate what is going on for prime properties in China. My friends in Shanghai and Beijing say the rate of price increases of typical housing units is above 50 per cent a year and may reach 100 per cent, and that new property developments are spreading fast from first to second-tier suburbs, with less convenient transportation.

Well, if so, the exchange rate appreciation would pose a risk.  Since the real exchange rate is the relative price of non-tratables against tradables, the appreciation would push farther non-tradable price, which would push the property price to the ceiling.  I wonder the authorities can tighten enough.  Well, well, well.

What is needed is a new rule in the WTO proscribing undervalued exchange rates. The irony is that export subsidies and import tariffs are individually disciplined in the WTO but their lethal combination in “an undervalued exchange rate” is not.

(Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Made a Nation)

ジョン・カーリン『インビクタス:負けざる者たち』 ("Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Made a Nation" by John Carlin)

The movie was so well done that I read the book.  The translation seemed to me seamlessly fluid.  A few notes to myself.

"Don't address their brains.  Address their hearts." - Nelson Mandela

The second thought I caught myself having was that, beyond a history, beyond even a fairy tale, this might also turn out to be an unwitting addition to the vast canon of self-help books offering people models for how to prosper in their daily lives.  Mandela mastered, more than anyone else alive (and, quite possibly, dead), the art of making friends and influencing people.

Ringer at the web-based recruitment test

March Grand Kabuki (March 2 - 28, 2010)

March Grand Kabuki (March 2 - 28, 2010)
Today's program features three sections of "SUGAWARA DENJU TENARAI KAGAMI (Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy)." This is a very long play about Sugawara no Michizane (known in this play as Kanshojo), a high-ranking imperial court minister who was a brilliant calligrapher and scholar. Political rivalries forced him to be exiled to distant Kyushu, where he died. But after Michizane's death, he became revered as the god of learning.
KAMO ZUTSUMI (The Kamo Riverbank)
Young Sakuramaru serves imperial prince Tokiyo who has fallen in love with Princess Kariya, Michizane’s beautiful daughter. Sakuramaru and his wife Yae are charmed by the affair, since it reminds them of their own love. But the affair is discovered and Michizane’s rivals use it as proof that he is attempting to take over the imperial court. This innocent love affair triggers the tragedies of the play.
SANMON GOSAN NO KIRI (Goemon and Hisayoshi)
Though short, this play is one of the most visually spectacular in kabuki. The famous villain Ishikawa Goemon enjoys a sea of cherry blossoms while sitting on top the large gate of Nanzen-ji Temple. His enjoyment of the scene is cut short, though, but the appearance below of his arch-nemesis, the general Hisayoshi.
ONNA SHIBARAKU (Female "Wait a Minute")
More ceremony than play, Shibaraku is one of the oldest pieces in kabuki. Just as an evil villain is about to execute a group of loyal retainers, a voice calls out for him to wait and a hero appears to save the day. This version is a parody, though, as the hero is played by an onnagata female role specialist, who mixes the super-human strength of an aragoto hero with the soft gentleness of a kabuki heroine.
HIPPO DENJU NO DAN
Michizane, in this play called Kanshojo, after his title, knows that he will soon be exiled. Before he goes, he hands over the scroll of his secrets to his most talented student Genzo. But Genzo was disowned forever for having an affair with Tonami, another servant in the household. Only the intervention of Kanshojo’s wife Sonou-no-Mae saved their lives. Even though Genzo receives his master’s teachings, he is not forgiven. Sugawara is arrested, but as Genzo and his wife leave, they rescue Kanshojo’s young son and take him to safety.
BENTEN MUSUME MEO NO SHIRANAMI (Benten, the Thief)
Written by Kawatake Mokuami in 1862, this play was inspired by a woodblock print of a sexy young man with tattoos covering his body with a woman's hairstyle and kimono. A beautiful young woman comes to a clothing store with her servant, but is discovered shoplifting and beaten. When she proves that she was not stealing, her servant demands compensation. However, a samurai who happens to be in the store reveals that the young woman is actually a man, and he proudly announces his name as Benten, the thief. The servant is his fellow gang member Nango Rikimaru and the samurai is actually the head of the gang Nippon Daemon. The performance ends with a kind of spectacle showing the five members of the gang in their finest kimonos under the cherry blossoms in full bloom. In elaborate speeches, they each announce their name in the poetic diction for which the playwright Mokuami is famous.
DOMYOJI (Domyoji Temple)
On his way to exile, Kanshojo is allowed to stop at the home of his aunt, Kakuju. There he carves a statue of himself for his aunt. But Princess Kariya is actually Kakuju’s daughter and was adopted by Kanshojo. She has come desperately hoping to say farewell to him, but she is punished severely by Kakuju for having been responsible for Kanshojo’s downfall. At the same time, Kakuju has another daughter, Tatsuta and Tatsuta’s husband Sukune Taro and father-in-law are plotting to assassinate Kanshojo by pretending to be the emissary to take him to exile and then killing him. Miraculously, the statue Kanshojo carved comes to life and saves his life. Finally, when the real emissary Terukuni appears, Kanshojo must part from his family as he goes into exile.
SHAKKYO (The Stone Bridge)
In Asian tradition, the shishi is not really a lion, but a kind of mythical creature that guards the mythical stone bridge to the heaven of the Buddhist deity Monju. This version of the dance closely follows the classical noh play. A high ranking Buddhist priest travels to China to try to cross the stone bridge into paradise. He encounters a woodcutter and a boy who say that only those with the greatest Buddhist merit can do that. The priest goes to continue his meditation and training. In the second half, the woodcutter and boy reveal themselves as the spirit of the shishi and Monju himself. The shishi shows his power by shaking his mane vigorously.

The Great Escape? A Quantitative Evaluation of the Fed’s Non-standard Monetary Policy

Abstract
This paper extends the model in Kiyotaki and Moore (2008) to include nominal wage and price frictions and explicitly incorporates the zero bound on the short-term nominal interest rate. We subject this model to a shock which arguably captures the 2008 US financial crisis. Within this framework we ask: Once interest rate cuts are no longer feasible due to the zero bound, what are the effects of non-standard open market operations in which the government exchanges liquid government liabilities for illiquid private assets? We find that the effect of this non-standard monetary policy can be large at zero nominal interest rates. We show model simulations in which these policy interventions prevented a repeat of the Great Depression in 2008-2009.

I watched both High Noon and The Wizard of OZ.  High Noon is somehow famous in Japan because Prime Minister Koizumi is the ardent fan of the movie.  It was said that he told President Bush that Japan was Grace Kelly in that movie.  Well, High Noon is the movie of one brave man and many cowards, or the movie of one irrational man and many rational people.

Then, I also watched The Wizard of OZ.  This movie is famous for Latin-Americanist economists just because of one article written by none other than Carlos Diaz-Alejandro.  I did not know that the phrase "I'm not in Kansas any more." appeared in the early part of the show.  I wonder how many times Judy Garland pronounced Kansas in the movie.
